WASTE HEAT TO POWER NATURAL GAS COMPRESSOR
Case Study
Project Description
ElectraTherm distributor, Gulf Coast Green Energy, teamed with an Oklahoma gas processing plant to use ElectraTherm’s technology to recover waste heat from an existing gas compressor engine to make on-site power. The ElectraTherm Power+ generator, a modular, waste heat-to-power generator makes fuel and emission-free electricity utilizing Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and proprietary technologies. The installation involved a Caterpillar 3608 engine and generates fuel and emission-free electricity for use onsite from the engine jacket water (exhaust gas can also be used to make additional power). The waste heat removed by the Power+ generator to produce power has the beneficial effect of increasing the engine cooling capacity allowing the compressor to operate at a greater output during the high summer temperatures of West Texas.
Environmental Benefits
- Helps meet ESG objectives
- Emission and fuel-free electricity
- Each Power+ generator offsets up to 1000 Tons of CO2/year
- Now qualifies for 30%-50% Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Other Potential Applications
Natural gas pipelines, crude oil processing, industrial gas compression, CO2 flooding, Gensets using internal combustion engines, coproduced fluids associated with oil and gas production.
Operational Benefits
- Provides a local source of power for oil production equipment
- Decreased cooling requirements for the engine
- Eliminates radiator for Gensets
Economic Benefits
- Reduces the existing plant’s retail electric requirements
- Increased engine efficiency from 6%-10% through decreased cooling load = Fuel savings
Environmental Benefits
- Projects can be up to 65 kW depending on engine size, waste heat capture scheme, and ambient conditions.
